Freezing temperatures can cause serious damage to pool plumbing and equipment if a pool isn’t properly prepared. Fortunately, there are several simple steps homeowners can take before a cold snap to help protect their pool from freeze-related damage.
Follow the checklist below to ensure your pool is ready for freezing weather.
1. Ensure Proper Water Level and Clear Skimmers
Your pool pump must maintain steady water flow during freezing temperatures to prevent ice from forming inside plumbing lines and equipment.
- Maintain the pool water level at about halfway up the tile line
- Remove all debris from skimmer baskets
- Clean the pump basket (pump pot)
Leaves, sticks, and debris can restrict water flow, increasing the risk of freeze damage.
2. Check Filter Pressure and Clean if Needed
A dirty filter reduces water flow and puts added strain on the pump.
- Check the pressure gauge on top of the filter
- If pressure is elevated or circulation seems weak, perform a backwash or clean the filter
Good circulation is critical during freezing conditions.
3. Keep Pool Equipment Running
During a freeze, water must keep moving to prevent ice buildup.
- If your system has freeze protection, it will automatically turn the pump on when air temperatures approach freezing
- If you do not have freeze protection, adjust your pump timers to run 24/7 until temperatures rise
Never shut the pump off during freezing weather unless power is lost.
4. Ensure Manual Valves Are Open
Some pools—especially older systems or those with water features—have manual valves that need to be adjusted by hand.
- Open manual valves slightly so water can flow through all plumbing lines
- Pools with slides, waterfalls, or fountains often require special attention
For Pools with Attached Spas:
- Open manual valves slightly on both the suction and return sides
- Monitor the spa water level to ensure it does not drain
Proper valve positioning ensures all pipes receive water flow during a freeze.
5. What to Do If Power Goes Out During a Freeze
If power is lost during freezing temperatures, take action immediately.
- Turn off all power to the pool equipment at the breaker box
- Remove drain plugs from:
- Pool pump
- Booster pump
- Filter
- Heater
- Store drain plugs in a safe, dry location
Draining the equipment allows ice to expand safely without cracking components.
6. Restarting Equipment After Power Is Restored
Once power is back on:
- Reinstall all drain plugs
- Fill the pump pot with water to prime the system
- Turn the equipment back on
- Observe the system closely for leaks or unusual noises
